So I used to look like that… a little scrawny and a little scared. I made my way to Brooklyn, NY by way of TWA (no longer in biz) and found myself in Park Slope. I went to the local public school and then spent a number of years at one of the local catholic schools. When it was time to apply for college, I decided it was time to leave the city and try something new, be totally anonymous, and be far away from some of the weirdos I had gone to grammar and high school with…
I found a SUNY college on the edge of NY State – called Fredonia. 10,000 Maniacs were from one of the nearby towns and I decided that wouldn’t be a bad place to go… prob had some decent music… and they did.
After college, I came back home (as all Gen-Xers do) and worked at a several places, mostly for min wage. It wasn’t until the last few years that I’ve really moved on from the world of uniformed customer service roles (ex: Barnes and Noble, Bide-A-Wee) to a job that entails a different type of uniform and slightly altered customer service (ex: Project manager for web and tech firms). Now instead of working in a facility, I work from home, fill out quarterly tax forms, and spend many days in tee shirts and shorts.
When it is needed and I am called upon, I pull out the dress clothing that I’ve acquired from my local Banana Republic and Gap stores, pull on my little shoes from Aerosoles (those are the most comfortable shoes I’ve EVER bought) and walk out the door to the F train. I smack slugs with sticks in my backyard and ponder why my hair turns gray. I will one day work with animals again as a full-time job and help them.
For now I volunteer for NYC Shiba Rescue and do web updates for it, complete adoptions, bounce ideas around with the founder and president, answer inquiries via the contact form, and whatever else is needed.
