A rare copy of the Declaration of Independence is now on display at the New York Public Library on Fifth Avenue. It's one of only two known copies of Thomas Jefferson’s handwritten, annotated version of the document.Just after the Declaration was ratified on July 4th, 1776, Jefferson made several copies of the text that had been submitted to the Continental Congress, underlining passages which had been changed.Jefferson was upset by the alterations — especially the removal of his condemnation of slavery.”What the exhibit was showing was that the Declaration was posted in all the current newspapers for all the people to see. So it wasn't just a thing that the Founding Fathers made, they really wanted to include the people in the declaration of the new country that they were making,” said one exhibit visitor.Admission is free and the exhibit will be on display through July 31.
