Andrew Knowlton: 10 Best Places for Donuts Across the Country

KM @ 2:42 AM

What Dalí was to art, Voodoo is to donuts. Among their masterpieces are the Dirty Snowball (chocolate cake donut with a pink marshmallow glaze) and the Memphis Mafia (chocolate chips, banana, and peanut butter).

It's a furry furry furry world…

KM @ 12:43 PM

I have a job now – at a dog daycare facility. In the list of jobs I wanted when I moved to PDX, this was second. The first was a humane law enforcement agent. I had spoken with several people at the humane society and felt that I was getting farther along in the process than I had ever gotten in NYC but they also stated they hire ex-law enforcement agents bc they have the experience of being hands-on with people. So my degree in Criminal Justice and experience handling animals was superior but my experience with people in hostile situations or tense situations was lacking. I understand but it doesn’t mean I am not willing to give it another shot in time.

The third job was to work at a vet. The medical side does interest me but not as much as the caring/training/rehab side of things – I prefer to be with the dogs and learn their personalities rather than medicate them. In my experience, dogs and cats always seemed somewhat confused as to why they are being forced to take medicine, hooked to an IV, or held for blood. It’s not to say they didn’t always cooperate but the care is different. You can’t take a few minutes and really comfort an animal if there’s a line of them waiting. In the shelter, things moved VERY fast and I’d have several oral syringes of clavamox or whatever and go down a line of animals who needed it – scratch them on the head, change my gloves, and move on. You don’t get the time to really cuddle them until after-wards when everyone is taken care of. I prefer to not have that time crunch over my head.

Anyway, I’ve been working for two weeks now and forgot how physically demanding the job can be. I’m not constantly cleaning, but it’s the “always on your toes” sort of position where you play with a few dogs, comfort the nervous ones, and have to keep an eye out for the troublemakers. At the end of the day, I’m tired and often times too tired to think and do anything productive. I also am covered in fur and soap. But it’s a great job and so nice to not be in an office, surrounded by fake walls, fake trees, and fake people. Anyone who has animals knows that they don’t disguise their intentions, you can read a dog and cat if you take the time to understand – you can tell when a dog is tensing up and readying for a fight and you can tell when a dog is going to “police” other dogs and be a bully.

It seems like 2010 started off on a rocky rocky note where I thought I’d drown but slowly it’s coming together.

Feeling Small and Amazed!

accidental mysteries: Feeling Small and Amazed!

RON MUECK (b. 1958) IS A HYPER-REAL SCULPTOR FROM AUSTRALIA NOW LIVING IN LONDON. His work can create an alarming reaction to viewers because of what he does with scale. When you look at photos of his studio (all © photographer Gautier Deblonde) you will see that what he does is extremely labor intensive.

Mueck started his career as in London where he was a model-maker for children’s television and films, including the amazing film Labyrinth. His first work which captured the attention of collector’s and the fine art world was Dead Dad, a sculpture of Mueck’s father. In that piece he used his own hair for the piece which was smaller in scale that life size.

See Leblonde’s photographs here.
