In less than a week I’ll be driving a spiffy Zipcar – Honda CRV – from Bklyn, NY up to Buffalo NY. I’ll be sailing along Rt. 17 for part of the trip and it reminded me of the time Poeks and I went to Fredonia for this 10th anniversary Women’s Student Union Event called: Women, Rock, and Soul. It’s basically an open mic held in a bar that raises money for WSU and gives some to a scholarship the college offers.
Anyway, on our drive up something happened where my car battery died and after having it jumped and looked at – the mechanic thought I could make it Fredonia as long as we didn’t stop the car. I said “ok!” and we were on our way. Around Bath, NY the car was cruising on Rt. 17 and everything started blinking on and off and it was dark out. I coasted as long as I could and eventually pulled over to the shoulder. Pitch black… trucks driving by fast enough to make the car move… and after god knows how long the tow truck FINALLY found us.
We spent the night in a Comfort Inn in Bath, rather then the ultra nice White Inn that I had reserved. The weekend was fine overall afterwards – went to Fredonia, saw a bunch of people, had some strange interactions with college kids who “knew” me and asked me all these things about how was it when we had to fight to get the student union chartered and established and how did the student gov’t go… that was odd. It was like a mini-fame moment. I don’t think I had any good answer other than something along the lines of “it took about 4 hours and lots of debates.” But honestly, I can’t remember the specifics other than telling someone that it’s just kids playing grown up games.
So this time I’m hoping a few things happen:
1 – get to Buffalo without any car trouble
2 – using my Garmin I hope to not get lost
3 – head down to Fredonia for lunch at this awesome little coffee shop
4 – see my friends’ kids and pets
5 – laugh a lot
6 – get a carton of cigs from the reservation
I am driving home alone – I’ve done 8 hour drives alone – doesn’t mean I like it. But Poeks knows that if I die, she gets whatever she wants and my friends and family get the rest. So it’s all good.
